The Essence
- Grasping the spiritual principle of Threeness opens a person to further inspired input.
- The open window invites, the breeze that moves through it stays unseen while pointing toward plenty.
- Subtle guidance should not be ignored by anyone ready to respond and seize the moment.
- In Sufi teaching the deep mystery of earthly life is abundance itself, not scarcity.
- Seeing oneself as poor is usually a false interpretation, or a flawed strategy of mind, rather than a fact.
- Luck functions as a spiritual principle, one of the outward signs of a spiritually mature person.
- What gets given out tends to return, generosity attracts generosity.
- Personal attainment shows as abundance, financial or not. It is a state of being, felt as the absence of want.
- A strong, clear sense of self brings confidence, and confidence invites good fortune.
- Uninhibited enthusiasm functions as a practice, evidence of the wisdom in mutual sharing.
The Image
An open window, a curtain, and a gust of wind. For a second the fabric fills and takes the shape of a horn of plenty, and then the wind drops and we are looking at a curtain again.
Everything in this degree depends on who made that shape, so let us be exact about it. The curtain did not. The curtain is cotton hanging on a rail, and left to itself it does nothing for us at all. The wind did not either, strictly speaking, since wind has no shape and makes none on its own. The cornucopia exists for a second because a formless force met a receptive material at an open window, and neither of them could have made it for us alone.
And the window had to be open. That is the only part of the arrangement anybody chose. Nobody summoned the wind and nobody designed the shape, and somebody at some point pushed the catch and left the window ajar, which is our entire contribution to what follows.
We met a version of this at Aries 8°, where a hat's streamers were blown horizontal by an east wind and the degree was about being stirred by something from outside. Here the same mechanism produces something quite different. The force does not merely move the fabric, it shapes it briefly into the oldest image of abundance we have. This is the fourth step of the fifth group, where the sequence always requires a new technique, and the technique here is receiving.
Jones gave the degree the keyword munificence, which means lavish giving, and we should notice the direction it points. The munificence is not the curtain's. Something generous is passing through the room, and the curtain is only what makes it visible to us for a moment, which is a demotion if you were hoping to be the author and a relief if you are tired of being one.
Think of how abundance has actually arrived in your life, when it has. The client who came from a conversation you barely remember. The flat that became available the week you needed it. The friendship that started because somebody else cancelled. We narrate all of it afterwards as the fruit of our strategy, and if we are honest our strategy was mostly leaving windows open and then being in the room.
So the degree asks two plain questions. Which of your windows are shut, and what do you do with a shape you did not make?

The Archetype
The archetype is the cornucopia, the horn that pours out more than was put into it.
The oldest version we have is Greek, and its detail should instruct us: the horn belonged to a goat that nursed the infant Zeus, it broke off, and it became an object that produced endless nourishment. The abundance in the story is a by-product of something else entirely. Nobody set out to make a horn of plenty, and it arrives as the fragment of an animal that happened to be feeding a child. Our other versions all keep the same structure. The cauldron that is never empty, the widow's jar of oil that does not run out, the loaves that multiply after being handed over. In every one of them the plenty appears in the course of something ordinary, and none of them is the result of a plan to be wealthy.
What the archetype knows is that abundance of this kind cannot be manufactured by us, and can only be received or refused. That is an uncomfortable proposition for a sign built on initiative, and we should take it as the reason this degree sits where it does. Everything Aries knows how to do is irrelevant to a cornucopia. You cannot earn it, you cannot fight for it, and you cannot even claim it in the sense the gate at Aries 22° required. You can only have left the window open.
Jones's poles mark the two ways this is lost. At its best, this degree is open-handed receiving and open-handed passing on, where the person treats what arrives as something moving through rather than something owed to them, and the flow continues. At its worst it fails as appropriation: the curtain concludes that it made the shape. We all recognise the resulting figure, who worked hard and was also lucky and has edited the second half out, and we should see that the editing is not merely a vanity. It closes the window, because somebody who believes they authored their own abundance stops leaving anything ajar.
There is a quieter failure too, and it is commoner among the careful ones of us. The window is shut on purpose, because a shape you did not make feels like a debt, and it is easier to refuse the gust than to be in anybody's keeping.
The Taoist Current
Chapter forty-two of the Dao De Jing has carried the generative arithmetic through this sign, at Aries 4°, Aries 14° and Aries 21°, and here it delivers the line that matters most. All things carry the yin and embrace the yang, and it is through the blending of these that harmony arrives.
The curtain and the wind are that sentence made visible. One is yielding, material, hanging still. The other is active, formless, moving. Neither of them contains the cornucopia, and the shape is what their blending produces, which the chapter offers us as a claim about everything rather than a special case about curtains.
Laozi then adds the practical half, which this degree needs. The chapter warns against the violent and the strong coming to a bad end, and it praises what yields. A curtain that resisted the wind would be a sail or a wall to us, and it would make no shape at all. Its usefulness is entirely in its willingness to be moved, and we should take that personally, because most of us have spent considerable effort becoming less movable and have called it strength.
The Yi Jing Resonance
The primary hexagram is Hexagram 42, Yi (Increase), which we met at Aries 20° as the complement to nourishment and which leads here. Wind over thunder, and its central image is of what grows through being given away: the ruler who diminishes his own store so that the people's increases. Its commentary is unusually direct that increase of this kind is not retained, and that the attempt to hold it stops it.
Its complement is Hexagram 20, Guan (Contemplation), which has appeared repeatedly in this sign and returns as the necessary counterweight. Yi gives the flow and Guan gives the watching, and the pairing identifies the degree's one real task: to notice what is passing through the room accurately enough to neither miss it nor claim it.
The Philosophical Content
Barbara Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory gives this degree a mechanism. Her finding was that our negative emotions narrow attention and behaviour, which is adaptive under threat, while positive ones broaden the range of what we notice and attempt, and that the broadening accumulates over time into durable resources: skills, relationships, resilience. The sequence matters to us here. Fredrickson's claim is not that feeling good is pleasant but that an open state builds capacity that a defended one cannot. That is the open window described in a laboratory. The resources arrive through a wider aperture rather than through more effort, and somebody permanently braced is not narrowing their comfort, they are narrowing their intake.
Marcel Mauss's study of the gift supplies the harder half. Examining exchange across archaic societies, he concluded that the free gift does not exist: a gift creates an obligation, and the obligation to receive is as binding as the obligation to give. Refusing a gift, in the societies he studied, was close to a declaration of hostility. What Mauss shows us is exactly why a shut window feels safer to us. A cornucopia shaped by something outside you does place you in a relationship you did not negotiate, and that is not paranoia, it is the structure of gift exchange. His further point is the one we need, and the one this degree rests on: the gift is designed to keep moving, and the obligation it creates is discharged by passing it on rather than by repaying the giver.
The Evolutionary Astrology Lens
A planet at this degree marks a soul learning to receive, which is a stranger task than it sounds.
Pluto here usually points to a history in which receiving was dangerous. Gifts that came with conditions attached, help that was later held over you, a parent whose generosity was a lever. Or the opposite shape: a household where you were the one who gave, and being the provider was your position, so that accepting anything would have cost you your role. Either way you arrive competent at giving and poor at taking, and most of us with this degree have never noticed the asymmetry in ourselves.
The South Node pattern is therefore the shut window. You pay your way, you decline offers, you prefer to owe nothing, and it reads as integrity. What it functions as is a refusal of the flow, and the cost is not only the help you turned down. People who are never allowed to give you anything slowly stop being close to you, because giving is how most of us try to get nearer.
The second pattern is appropriation, and it tends to belong to the more successful version of this degree. Things did arrive, you did work hard, and over the years the arriving got written out of the account. The tell is a quiet impatience with other people's luck.
The North Node asks for the two-part discipline the symbol describes. Leave windows open on purpose, which means saying yes to things with no clear return and staying in rooms where you are not useful. And pass on what arrives rather than storing it, because this degree's abundance behaves like Mauss's gift and goes stale when it is held. The soul growth is the discovery that being in somebody's keeping is survivable, and that you were never the author of most of what you have.
Jupiter at this degree brings the gusts and the temptation to take credit for the weather. Saturn shuts the window and calls it self-reliance. Venus receives easily and can forget to pass anything on. Neptune leaves every window open and loses track of which gifts had conditions, which is the one genuine risk in the open posture.
What matures here is distinctive and easy to be around. Somebody things keep happening to, who says so plainly, and through whose hands a noticeable amount keeps moving on to other people.
The Buddhist Dimension
Dāna, generosity, met at Aries 20° where a child fed birds in winter, returns here from the other side. At that degree the question was giving. Here it is the receiving half, and the tradition takes it seriously in a way we tend not to: the monastic order is built on the premise that the one who accepts the meal is completing the transaction rather than merely benefiting from it.
That structure is worth our attention, because it inverts our instinct completely. A begging bowl is not an admission of failure in that system, it is an office, and a householder's generosity has nowhere to go without somebody willing to receive it gracefully. The teaching this degree takes from that is specific. Refusing what is offered is not humility. It removes the other person's opportunity, and a curtain that will not fill shows us nothing at all.
The Soul's Work
Your work at this degree is to open one window you have deliberately shut, and then to let whatever arrives keep moving.
Start with the honest audit of refusals. Think back over the last year and find the offers you declined: the introduction, the loan, the lift, the invitation, the help with something you insisted on doing alone. Write down three of them, and against each one write the reason you gave yourself. Most of us will find the same reason three times, and it will sound like independence.
Then run the experiment. Accept the next thing offered, fully, without balancing it in the same breath. No reciprocal invitation, no insisting on paying, no explaining that you did not need it. Just thank you, and then sit with the discomfort, which will be sharper than you expect and is the actual content of this degree.
Then leave windows open on purpose, which means doing things with no visible return. Go to the thing you are not useful at. Say yes to a conversation that leads nowhere obvious. Keep one afternoon a month with nothing in it that could be described as productive. Gusts do not arrive through sealed rooms, and almost every good thing in your life came through an opening you had forgotten about.
And pass it on. Whatever arrives through your hands, move some of it along within the month, to somebody who cannot reciprocate. This degree's abundance is a flow rather than a holding, and the horn only pours while something is moving through it.
You did not make the shape. You left the window open, and for a moment the room was full of it.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Sabian Symbol for Aries 24°?
The Sabian Symbol for Aries 24° is Blown inward by the wind, the curtains of an open window take the shape of a cornucopia, in the wording Dane Rudhyar gave it in An Astrological Mandala (1973). The image itself was channelled by Elsie Wheeler in 1925 and first recorded by Marc Edmund Jones. It is Phase 24 of the 360, the fourth step inside the cycle's fifth group of five. Jones's keyword is munificence.
What does Aries 24° mean in a natal chart?
A planet here points to a life in which a good deal arrives rather than being produced, and to the question of whether you can receive it. The strength is an unusual permeability, the open window. The work is accepting what comes without either refusing it or claiming authorship of it, and passing it on rather than storing it.
What is the keyword for Aries 24°?
The keyword Marc Edmund Jones assigned is MUNIFICENCE, lavish giving, and it points away from the curtain: something generous is passing through the room and the fabric only makes it briefly visible. At its best this degree receives and passes on with an open hand. At its worst the curtain concludes it made the shape, which closes the window, since nobody who believes they authored their own abundance leaves anything ajar.
What is the shadow side of Aries 24°?
The shut window: paying your own way, declining offers, preferring to owe nothing, which reads as integrity and functions as a refusal of the flow. Its cost is not only the help declined, since people who are never allowed to give you anything gradually stop being close to you. The second shadow is appropriation, where the arriving gets written out of the account, and the tell is impatience with other people's luck.
How does Fredrickson's broaden-and-build theory relate to this degree?
Fredrickson found that negative emotions narrow attention and behaviour while positive emotions broaden what we notice and attempt, and that the broadening accumulates into durable resources. That is the open window measured in a laboratory: capacity arrives through a wider aperture rather than through more effort, and somebody permanently braced is narrowing their intake rather than their comfort.
How does Mauss's theory of the gift apply here?
Mauss concluded that the free gift does not exist, that a gift creates obligation, and that the obligation to receive is as binding as the obligation to give, with refusal close to hostility in the societies he studied. That explains why a shut window feels safer, since abundance shaped by something outside you does place you in an unnegotiated relationship. His further point is the one this degree rests on: the gift is discharged by being passed on rather than repaid.
How does Pluto factor into the Evolutionary Astrology Lens at this degree?
Pluto points to receiving having been dangerous, whether through gifts with conditions attached and help later held over you, or through being the provider in a household where accepting anything would have cost you your role. Either way you arrive competent at giving and poor at taking. The Nodes move toward open windows and an abundance that keeps moving.
How does the Yi Jing illuminate this degree?
Hexagram 42, Yi (Increase), leads here after serving at Aries 20°: wind over thunder, growth through what is given away, with a commentary insisting that increase of this kind is not retained and that holding it stops it. Its complement, Hexagram 20, Guan (Contemplation), supplies the watching, which is the one real task: noticing what passes through the room accurately enough neither to miss it nor to claim it.
