The Essence
- Embodied desire and transcendent meaning are not opposites, this degree holds them together.
- People are drawn into relationship by desire, then use the relationship to learn to hold polarity within themselves.
- Rebellious immaturity settles once polarity is mastered inwardly rather than chased through another person.
- Awareness of life's highest aspect depends on accepting its lowest.
- Self-discipline is what makes it safe to explore the less civilized parts of human nature without fear.
- Impulses society rejects outright can still contribute to overall wellbeing.
- Revelation here arrives through embodied experience, not in spite of it.
- Balancing appetite against responsible self-discipline is the discipline this degree asks for.
- Being part animal and part something higher is not a flaw to resolve, it is the human condition.
- Ritualizing a relationship of this kind gives structure to what would otherwise stay chaotic.
The Image
A man and a woman, and a serpent coiling near them. Three figures, and the third of them is not a person like us.
We met this couple before, at Aries 4°, walking somewhere secluded with nothing to achieve. Ten degrees later we find them still together, and something has joined them. The serpent is not a visitor and it is not a threat in the way our inherited reading wants it to be. It is the thing that was always moving between them, now visible to us, and the degree is about what happens when a pair stops being two people and notices the current running through them.
Take the serpent seriously as an image rather than as a moral. It is the oldest symbol we have for life force that operates below choice: it sheds and renews, it moves without limbs, it lives close to the ground and in the dark, it carries both venom and medicine on the same staff. Every tradition we have that works with energy in the body ends up drawing it coiled. What the serpent is not, in any of the systems we have inherited, is personal. It does not belong to the man or to the woman. It uses them.
That impersonality is the whole content of the degree, and it is the thing we most reliably get wrong. When desire moves through two of us we both tend to read it as a fact about each other: I feel this because of who you are, and the intensity is the measure of our bond. Sometimes you are right about that. Often what is happening is that a force much older than either of your biographies has found a circuit, and the circuit is flattering to be part of.
Think of what people do on the strength of it. Lives rearranged in a fortnight, marriages ended, countries moved to, children conceived, all on the evidence of a current that neither party generated and neither can switch off. We are not wrong to treat that as significant. We are frequently wrong about what it signifies.
Jones gave this degree the keyword revelation, which is precise and slightly unnerving. Something gets shown here that cannot be shown any other way. You find out what you actually want, what you are willing to do, and what you have been managing, and your discovery arrives through another body rather than through your own reflection. Nothing exposes you faster, which is why every serious tradition treats this territory as both a path and a hazard.
This is Phase 14 of the 360, the fourth step inside the cycle's third group of five, the place where a new technique is required. Here the technique is the hardest one on the list: staying yourself inside a force that does not care who you are.

The Archetype
The archetype is the sacred marriage, the union that is also an initiation.
Every tradition we know has a version of it, and none of them treat it as romance. The god and goddess whose coupling makes the year turn. The alchemical king and queen in the vessel, who have to dissolve before anything new can form. The temple rite where two people enact something larger than themselves on behalf of a community. In all of them the pair matters less than what passes between them, and we are shown the encounter as dangerous, prepared for, and hedged about with structure.
That structure is the detail we have discarded, and we should notice what we lost with it. Ritual did two things at once here. It gave the force a container so that it could be met fully rather than in small frightened doses, and it protected the participants from mistaking a transpersonal current for a personal verdict. Without the container we get both failures at once: people who cannot let the thing move through them at all, and people who are destroyed by it while believing they are being told the truth about their lives.
Jones's two poles land on exactly that axis. At its best, this degree is a relationship in which the current is allowed and consciously handled, so that what gets revealed is usable and both people are still standing. At its worst there are two collapses available. One is possession, where the force takes the wheel and the person follows it through a series of wreckages, each of which felt like destiny at the time. The other is domestication, where the serpent is shown the door, the relationship becomes a well-run arrangement, and both parties quietly stop being revealed to anybody, including themselves.
So the archetype's question is uncomfortable and worth sitting with. Can you let something that impersonal move through your body without handing it your judgement?
The Taoist Current
Chapter forty-two of the Dao De Jing supplied the arithmetic at Aries 4°: the one gives rise to two, the two give rise to three, and from three come the ten thousand things. At that degree we were watching the two arrive. Here we are looking at the three.
The serpent is the third thing. It is what the pair produces and cannot control, and the chapter tells us plainly that this is where generation actually happens. Nothing comes from the one alone and nothing comes from a stalemate between two. The ten thousand things arrive only once a third term appears, which in Laozi's cosmology is the charged relation between the opposites rather than a compromise between them.
The chapter then adds a line we tend to skip, about the violent and the strong not reaching a natural end. Applied here it is a warning about handling. The third thing is the generative one and it is not tame, and treating it as something to be mastered puts you in the category Laozi says comes to a bad end. Your instruction is to let it move, and to stay soft enough that it does not break you.
The Yi Jing Resonance
The primary hexagram is Hexagram 31, Xian (Influence), which we met at Aries 4° as mutual attraction, two forces each open to being affected. Here it returns with the charge turned up, and the classical line readings move up the body from the toes to the calves to the heart to the mouth, which is a startlingly physical sequence for a text this old. The commentary treats the attraction as real and insists on correctness of conduct inside it.
Its complement is Hexagram 61, Zhong Fu (Inner Truth), and this is the pairing that makes the degree workable. Zhong Fu is about sincerity so complete that it moves others without argument. Xian supplies the current and Zhong Fu supplies the one condition under which the current reveals anything useful, which is that both people are telling the truth.
The Philosophical Content
Georges Bataille built a philosophy around the observation that we experience ourselves as separate, bounded beings and cannot bear it. In his account, eroticism is one of the few available breaches in that boundary, which is why he placed it next to religious experience and to death as the three places where the bounded self is suspended. His word for what we normally are is discontinuous, and his claim is that the appeal of the erotic is not pleasure but the temporary loss of that discontinuity. This is the serpent described in philosophical terms. It is not a relationship phenomenon at all for Bataille, it is an encounter with the dissolution of the self, and the other person is the occasion rather than the cause.
Jung's coniunctio comes at the same territory with a different purpose. In the alchemical texts he spent decades reading, the union of king and queen is never an end state; it is a stage, and it is followed by death and putrefaction before anything is reborn. Jung read this as a map of psychological transformation, in which contact with the contrasexual element in oneself, met through another person, dissolves the existing personality so that a larger one can form. The crucial detail for this degree is that he insisted the real work is internal. The other person makes the encounter possible, and treating them as the goal is how the process stalls.
The Evolutionary Astrology Lens
A planet at this degree marks a soul whose transformation runs through intimacy, and who has to learn to read what intimacy is actually saying.
Pluto here points to a history in which the force was handled badly by the adults nearby. Sometimes that means it was everywhere and unregulated, with a parent's appetites or affairs shaping the household weather. Sometimes it means the opposite, a home where your body and your desire were simply not acknowledged, so that you learned the current was shameful and powerful at once. Either way you arrive with high sensitivity to it and no instruction manual.
The South Node pattern has two shapes and most people with this degree have run both. The first is being driven: your life organised around the arrival of the current, each surge read as a message about your destiny, and a trail of rearrangements behind you that looked inevitable at the time. The second is the shutdown, where the force is excluded from the relationship entirely and the arrangement works perfectly and nobody is revealed to anybody.
The North Node asks for the container that the archetype says we lost. Allow the current fully, in the body, without euphemism, and refuse to let it do your thinking. That means separating two questions that this degree fuses together: what is moving through you, and what you should do about your life. The first deserves your full attention. The second needs a sober week and somebody honest to talk to.
Venus and Mars at this degree intensify the circuit and the certainty. Pluto makes your encounters transformative and expensive. Neptune dissolves the boundary between the person and the force, which is where the destiny stories come from. Saturn builds your container slowly, usually after one encounter has cost you enough to make structure appealing rather than insulting.
What matures here is unusual and recognisable. Somebody fully alive in the body, who takes desire seriously as information and not as instruction, and who can be close to another person without either of them being consumed.
The Buddhist Dimension
Tantra is the tradition that takes this degree's position as a method rather than a danger to be avoided. Its basic move is to work with energy that other paths renounce, on the understanding that the force is not the obstacle, and that our relationship to it is. Polarity, including sexual polarity, becomes a vehicle, and the body becomes the place the work happens rather than the thing it happens despite.
What the tantric literature never does is treat this as permission. The texts are heavy with preconditions: preparation, instruction, ethical ground, and a teacher, precisely because the method is powerful and the failure modes are severe. We should read that emphasis as the degree's own warning in doctrinal form. The serpent can be a path, and the traditions that say so are also the ones most insistent that it requires a container, which should tell us something about how rarely any of us handles it well without one.
The Soul's Work
Your work at this degree is to let the current move and to stop treating it as an oracle.
Begin by separating the two questions, because this degree welds them together and most of the damage lives in the weld. What is moving through me right now, in the body, honestly described? And what, if anything, should change in my life? The first question deserves your full attention and no euphemism. The second one deserves two weeks, a conversation with somebody who is not involved, and a deep suspicion of any answer that arrives while the current is running.
Then look at your own history with it. Write down the three occasions when desire rearranged your life, and next to each one write what you believed it meant at the time and what you would say about it now. Most of us find a pattern there, and it is usually not the pattern we were telling ourselves.
And build the container, which is less exotic than it sounds. It means being honest with the person you are with rather than managing them. It means knowing what you have agreed and saying when that changes. It means noticing when you are about to use somebody as an occasion.
The serpent is not yours and it never was. Let it move, pay attention to what it shows you, and keep your own hand on the decisions.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Sabian Symbol for Aries 14°?
The Sabian Symbol for Aries 14° is A serpent coiling near a man and a woman, in the wording Dane Rudhyar gave it in An Astrological Mandala (1973). The image itself was channelled by Elsie Wheeler in 1925 and first recorded by Marc Edmund Jones. It is Phase 14 of the 360, the fourth step inside the cycle's third group of five. Jones's keyword is revelation.
What does Aries 14° mean in a natal chart?
A planet here points to a life in which transformation arrives through intimacy and through the body rather than through reflection. The strength is that you are genuinely alive to the current and it shows you things nothing else would. The work is taking desire seriously as information without accepting it as instruction.
What is the keyword for Aries 14°?
The keyword Marc Edmund Jones assigned is REVELATION. At its best this degree is a relationship in which the current is allowed and consciously handled, so that what gets revealed is usable and both people are still standing. At its worst it collapses either into possession, following the force through a series of wreckages that each felt like destiny, or into domestication, where the serpent is shown the door and nobody is revealed to anybody.
What is the shadow side of Aries 14°?
Being driven, mostly: a life organised around the arrival of the current, each surge read as a message about destiny, with a trail of rearrangements behind it that looked inevitable at the time. The mirror shadow is the shutdown, where desire is excluded from the relationship, the arrangement runs perfectly, and both people stop being known.
How does Bataille's philosophy of eroticism relate to this degree?
Bataille held that we experience ourselves as separate, bounded beings and cannot bear it, and that eroticism is one of the few breaches in that boundary, which is why he set it alongside religious experience and death. On his account the appeal is not pleasure but the temporary loss of separateness, which makes the other person the occasion rather than the cause.
How does Jung's concept of coniunctio apply here?
In the alchemical texts Jung studied, the union of king and queen is a stage rather than an end, followed by dissolution before anything is reborn. He read it as a map of psychological transformation through contact with the contrasexual element met in another person, and he insisted the real work is internal, which is why treating the other person as the goal stalls the process.
How does Pluto factor into the Evolutionary Astrology Lens at this degree?
Pluto points to a history in which this force was badly handled nearby, whether unregulated and shaping the household weather or so unacknowledged that the body became shameful and powerful at once. Either way you arrive highly sensitive to it with no instruction. The Nodes move toward allowing the current fully while keeping your own hand on the decisions.
How does the Yi Jing illuminate this degree?
Hexagram 31, Xian (Influence), returns from Aries 4° with the charge raised, its line readings moving up the body from the toes to the mouth while insisting on correct conduct inside the attraction. Its complement, Hexagram 61, Zhong Fu (Inner Truth), supplies the condition that makes the current reveal anything useful, which is that both people are telling the truth.
