The Essence

  1. Clear, assertive purpose applied to latent potential brings something new into being.
  2. Existence is far from sterile, it is a polarized life-force that cannot help creating new life.
  3. Vitality finds no exaltation in petty things, depth requires protection.
  4. A modest person carrying their own burdens is often reluctant to open up quickly.
  5. Personal brilliance requires holding the right elements in correct relationship, with full attention invested.
  6. Avoiding trivial engagement matters, since getting bogged down in pettiness erodes capacity.
  7. Integrity often means resisting new involvement rather than abruptly ending what has begun.
  8. Understating one's own aims protects vitality and integrity together.
  9. Most everyday interaction is inconsequential, the superficial differences between people rarely matter.
  10. Reticence toward trivial matters helps considerably whenever a heavy load must be carried.

The Image

A pregnant woman in a light summer dress. Not concealed, not announced. Simply visible, and entirely at ease about it.

The dress is doing more work here than we might expect, so let us start there. It is light, which means thin, which means nothing is hidden and nothing is emphasised. She has not put on something loose to disguise the shape and she has not dressed to display it. The condition is apparent to any of us who looks, and she is not managing how we look, and that combination of exposure and composure is the whole temperature of this degree.

Then the fact itself. Something is growing inside her that she did not design, cannot accelerate and does not need to supervise, which is already unlike most of what we make. The work is happening on its own schedule, in the dark, and her part in it is neither effort nor technique. Her part is to carry it, to eat and sleep, and to let the thing take the time it takes.

And notice how that answers the two degrees behind us. At Aries 21° a boxer climbed into a ring and everything depended on his exertion. At Aries 22° a garden stood waiting behind a gate and everything depended on his walking in. This is the third step, which always resolves the first two, and the resolution is a condition in which neither fighting nor claiming applies. You cannot box a pregnancy into arriving, and you cannot step through a gate to reach it. You can only carry yours and wait.

Jones's keyword is the surprise of this degree. He gave it reticence, which sounds like a social quality and here means something closer to structural silence. She is not explaining herself. She is not making a case for the pregnancy, justifying it, or soliciting opinions about it, and the condition is entirely legible without her saying a word. Most of us have the opposite reflex. We narrate what we are doing, often before it exists, and we should ask ourselves what our narration is for.

Think of what happens when you tell everybody about a plan at the point where it is still soft. Something leaks out of it. You get the warmth of your announcement, the interest, the encouragement, and a week later your actual work is harder to start than it was before you spoke. Your talking paid out some of the satisfaction in advance, and none of us who claims never to have done it is being honest.

So the degree asks us for something unfashionable. Can you carry something real, visibly, without discussing it?

The Archetype

The archetype is gestation, the work that happens in the dark and cannot be hurried.

We have always known that this is a different kind of making from our usual one. The seed under the ground through the winter. The wine in the barrel. The cheese in the cave. The student who disappears for seven years and comes back a craftsman. In every one of them our useful intervention is almost entirely negative: keep the temperature, keep the light out, keep your hands off it, and do not open the vessel to check.

What our ancestors built around this was protection rather than encouragement, and the detail is worth noticing. The customs around pregnancy in most of the cultures we have records of are about shielding: who may visit, what may be said, what must not be looked at, how long the mother stays apart after the birth. We tend to read these as superstition and miss the structural point. A culture that hedges gestation with that much protection has understood something we have mislaid: a developing thing is vulnerable to the conditions around it in a way that a finished thing is not.

Jones's two poles name the risks precisely. At its best, this degree is a person who can hold something developing, in full view, without needing to explain or defend it, and who protects it by simply not discussing it. At its worst it fails in two directions. The first is the leak: everything narrated, the plan discussed into flatness, the energy paid out in advance as sympathy and interest. The second is secrecy, which looks like this degree and is not it. The woman in the light dress is not hiding. Reticence is the absence of commentary, and concealment is a commentary of its own.

And there is the environmental danger the older readings of this degree took seriously. Something gestating is drained by mediocre surroundings, by the ambient pessimism of people who stopped making things, and the drain is gradual enough that we usually fail to attribute it. Protect the thing you are growing from the people who will tell you, kindly, that it has all been done before.

The Taoist Current

Chapter fifty-six of the Dao De Jing states this degree's discipline in one line. Those who know do not speak; those who speak do not know.

We are inclined to hear that as a put-down of talkers, and his point is more structural than ours. The chapter goes on about closing the openings and shutting the doors, blunting the sharpness, softening the glare, and it is describing a way of holding something that does not involve projecting it outward. Knowledge, for Laozi, is not completed by being expressed, and our expression is one of the ways it leaks.

Applied to the woman in the summer dress, the chapter is not telling her to hide. She is concealing nothing from us, and nothing in the Taoist reading requires her to. It is telling her that the carrying is sufficient, and that the urge to describe what she is carrying would add nothing to the pregnancy and would spend something that the pregnancy needs.

There is a social half to the chapter too, about the person who cannot be flattered or disgraced because they are not seeking either. That is the composure we see in the light dress. She is visible and unbothered, and it is only possible because she is not asking us for anything.

The Yi Jing Resonance

The primary hexagram is Hexagram 36, Mingyi (Darkening of the Light), the sun gone beneath the earth, and its commentary is unusually practical. In conditions that are hostile or merely dim, the advice to us is to keep the light hidden and keep working: neither abandoning the project nor displaying it. The classical readings are explicit that the brightness is preserved rather than extinguished, which is exactly what gestation requires.

Its complement is Hexagram 3, Zhun (Difficulty at the Beginning), which we met at Aries 1° as the sprout pushing through soil. Here it returns at the other end of the sign to say the same thing about a different stage. Mingyi gives us the darkness that protects and Zhun gives us the struggle inside it, and between them they describe something alive and unfinished, working in conditions it would be a mistake to open.

The Philosophical Content

Simone Weil wrote about attention in terms that fit this degree exactly. Her claim was that attention consists of suspending our thought, leaving it available, empty and ready to be entered by its object, and she was emphatic that it is not the same as muscular effort. We think we are paying attention when we frown and concentrate, and her point is that we are doing a different and lesser thing: real attention is a kind of waiting, and it requires us to stop grabbing at the thing. She called attention the rarest and purest form of generosity. The woman carrying something she cannot hurry is in Weil's posture rather than the boxer's, and her composure is what that posture looks like from outside.

Carl Rogers supplies the other half with congruence, one of the three conditions he considered necessary for growth. Congruence means being what one is without facade, so that what is felt, what is experienced and what is shown are the same thing. Rogers found that this mattered more than technique: a therapist performing acceptance produced worse outcomes than one who was simply undefended. The light summer dress is congruence made visible. She is not managing anybody's impression of her condition, and there is no gap between the fact and the presentation, which is why the reticence reads as composure and not as secrecy.

The Evolutionary Astrology Lens

A planet at this degree marks a soul learning to carry something without narrating it.

Pluto here usually points to a history in which visibility was unsafe or performance was required. Sometimes you had to explain and justify everything, in a household where nothing was allowed to be private, so that an unexamined inner life was not available to you. Sometimes the opposite: a family that drained whatever you produced, with discouragement so constant that anything developing had to be hidden to survive, and hiding became your only protection.

The South Node pattern is the leak. You talk about what you are making, early and often, and your talking is subtly load-bearing: it supplies the encouragement, the reality and the momentum that the work itself has not yet earned. The tell is a pattern of projects that were vivid in conversation and never got made, and the reason is not laziness. The satisfaction was drawn down in advance.

The second pattern is concealment, and we should distinguish it from the degree's actual instruction. Here you share nothing, nobody knows what you are working on, and your secrecy is doing a job that has nothing to do with protection. The woman in the summer dress is plainly visible. If your version involves people not knowing, that is a different degree and a different wound.

The North Node asks for the specific combination this symbol holds, which is visible and unexplained. Let the thing be apparent without being discussed. Practically that means working where people can see you working, answering direct questions honestly and briefly, and not supplying the commentary nobody asked for. The soul growth is the discovery that your work develops faster when you stop spending it in conversation.

Mercury at this degree finds silence genuinely difficult and will rationalise the telling. Moon makes the gestating thing feel fragile and the protection urgent. Saturn produces the concealer and takes decades to loosen. Neptune blurs the line between the plan and the thing, so that describing it feels like progress.

What matures here is quietly impressive. Somebody we discover has been working on something substantial for two years, which none of us heard about, and which was never a secret.

The Buddhist Dimension

Upekkhā, equanimity, which we met at Aries 21° where the subject was contest, returns here as the quality that makes reticence possible rather than strained. Her composure in the light dress is not suppression. She is not biting back an announcement; there is simply no pressure in her requiring release.

The tradition would locate the difference precisely, and it is useful for us. Silence maintained against an urge to speak is willpower, and it is unstable. Silence in the absence of that urge is equanimity, and it holds indefinitely. The practical consequence is that this degree is not primarily a discipline about talking. It is a question about why the telling feels necessary, and when the answer to that is examined properly, the reticence tends to arrive on its own.

The Soul's Work

Your work at this degree is to carry one thing for three months without discussing it, and to notice what the urge to tell was actually for.

Pick the thing first, and pick something real and unfinished: a piece of work, a decision taken and not yet acted on, a change you are preparing. Then impose one rule. You will not raise it. If somebody asks directly you answer briefly and honestly, because this is reticence and not concealment, and then you let the subject go.

Now watch yourself, because the interesting material arrives in the first fortnight. You will find moments where you are about to mention it, and each one carries information. What were you about to get? Encouragement, probably, or the pleasure of being interesting, or reassurance that it is a good idea. Those are all real needs and none of them is the work. Noticing which one you reached for is the actual exercise.

Then audit your surroundings, because this degree's oldest reading takes that seriously. Who in your life reliably flattens whatever you bring to them? Not the honest critic, who is valuable, but the one whose response leaves you slightly smaller every time. While something is gestating, you are allowed to keep it away from them, and you do not owe them an explanation for that either.

And be visible while you do it. Work where people can see you. Do not disappear, do not go mysterious, do not drape anything over the shape of what you are carrying.

A light summer dress, nothing hidden, nothing announced. The thing is growing and it does not need your commentary.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sabian Symbol for Aries 23°?

The Sabian Symbol for Aries 23° is A pregnant woman in light summer dress, in the wording Dane Rudhyar gave it in An Astrological Mandala (1973). The image itself was channelled by Elsie Wheeler in 1925 and first recorded by Marc Edmund Jones. It is Phase 23 of the 360, the third step inside the cycle's fifth group of five. Jones's keyword is reticence.

What does Aries 23° mean in a natal chart?

A planet here points to a life in which something is usually developing that cannot be hurried, and to the question of how much you say about it. The strength is the capacity to carry something visibly without defending or explaining it. The work is noticing what your telling is for, and protecting the unfinished thing from surroundings that drain it.

What is the keyword for Aries 23°?

The keyword Marc Edmund Jones assigned is RETICENCE, which here means structural silence rather than social reserve. At its best this degree holds something developing in full view without needing to explain it. At its worst it fails either as the leak, where everything is narrated and the energy is paid out in advance, or as concealment, which looks similar and is a commentary of its own.

What is the shadow side of Aries 23°?

The leak: talking about the work early and often, so that the conversation supplies the encouragement and momentum the work has not yet earned. The tell is a history of projects that were vivid in conversation and never got made. The opposite shadow is concealment, where nobody knows what you are doing, which is a different wound, since the woman in the light dress is plainly visible.

How does Weil's philosophy of attention relate to this degree?

Weil held that attention consists of suspending thought and leaving it empty and available to its object, and insisted it is not muscular effort: real attention is a form of waiting that requires us to stop grabbing. She called it the rarest and purest form of generosity. Somebody carrying what she cannot hurry is in Weil's posture rather than the boxer's.

How does Rogers's concept of congruence apply here?

Congruence, one of Rogers's three conditions for growth, means being what one is without facade, so that what is felt, experienced and shown are the same. He found it mattered more than technique, since a therapist performing acceptance did worse than one who was simply undefended. The light summer dress is congruence made visible, which is why the reticence reads as composure rather than secrecy.

How does Pluto factor into the Evolutionary Astrology Lens at this degree?

Pluto points either to a household where nothing was allowed to be private and everything had to be justified, or to one that drained whatever the child produced, so that anything developing had to be hidden to survive. The Nodes move toward the combination this symbol holds, which is visible and unexplained.

How does the Yi Jing illuminate this degree?

Hexagram 36, Mingyi (Darkening of the Light), puts the sun beneath the earth and advises keeping your light hidden while continuing to work in dim or hostile conditions, preserving the brightness rather than extinguishing it. Its complement, Hexagram 3, Zhun (Difficulty at the Beginning), returns from Aries 1° as the sprout in the soil, the struggle going on inside the dark.
