The Image

The butterfly is pinned. The dart has passed through the body — the specific, small, precise act of the collector who has taken this living thing and stopped it at its moment of greatest perfection. The wings are spread exactly as they were in the best moment of the flight. The colours are preserved. The pattern is fixed, immortalised, held at the peak of what the butterfly was capable of being.

The butterfly cannot fly again. It also cannot decay.

This is the specific exchange that the dart has made: the movement, the living, the flight — given up in exchange for the perfect, preserved, permanently accessible form that no living butterfly can maintain because living things change, age, and die. The dart has made the butterfly into an archetype — the specific, crystallised, permanently available pattern of what a butterfly of this kind most fully is.

And Rudhyar sees in this the precise image of what Libra 1° announces as the theme of the entire second hemicycle: the shift from the individualization of the first 180 degrees to the collectivization of the second 180, in which the perfect forms developed through individual discipleship now become the archetypes around which genuine community can gather.

At the autumn equinox, the Virgo disciple who has been perfected through the disciplines of the first half of the year is impaled — fixed at perfection — so that the form of what genuine development looks like can be permanently available as the standard around which the second half's socialisation can organise.

The butterfly cannot teach other butterflies how to fly. The pinned butterfly teaches everyone who looks at it what a butterfly most fully is.

The Archetype

The threshold between Virgo 30° and Libra 1° is the most significant threshold in the entire Sabian cycle. Virgo 30° closed the first hemisphere with the man who was deaf to any allurement — the total concentration at the gate, the conquest of illusion, the decisive step through the threshold. And now Libra 1° opens the second hemisphere with the butterfly impaled by the dart: the announcement of what the entire collectivisation process of Libra through Pisces is for.

The Virgo journey produced the perfect specimen — the disciplined, developed, genuinely refined individual who has undergone the portrait, the cross, the guardian angels, the children, the nature spirits, the merry-go-round, the harem, the dancing lesson, the expressionist painter, all the way to the man deaf to any allurement. That development is the butterfly. And now the dart: the specific, sacred fixing of that development into the archetypal form that will serve as the standard for the collectivisation that follows.

Jung would read the impaled butterfly through his concept of the imago — the specific, crystallised, internally held image of what a thing or a person most fully is, that serves as the template against which the ongoing development is measured. The pinned butterfly is the imago of the butterfly: not the living, changing, flight-capable individual but the permanent, accessible, archetypal form that the living individual is always approximating and never fully being.

The transfiguration that Rudhyar explicitly invokes — the moment at the Mount of Transfiguration when Jesus was impaled by the ray of divine light — is the mythological expression of exactly what the dart does: the merely human individual, through the specific, dedicated quality of their individual development, becomes the pure embodiment of an archetype. The transfiguration is not the destruction of the individual. It is the individual's elevation into the archetypal — the point at which who they are and what they represent become the same thing.

The shadow Jones named: the loss of all true selfhood by a needless surrender to the world and conformity to its ways — the butterfly that allows the world's mediocrity to pin it before it has achieved the perfection that makes the pinning meaningful. The conformity that stops the individual development prematurely, not at the peak of genuine achievement but at the level of what is socially acceptable. This butterfly is pinned but not a standard — it preserves adequacy rather than excellence.

The Taoist Current

Chapter 16 of the Tao Te Ching: All things arise, flourish, and then return to the source. Returning to the source is called stillness. This is what is meant by returning to one's destiny.

The butterfly impaled by the dart has returned to the source — not by dying in the ordinary sense but by achieving the specific stillness of the archetypal form, the fixed point from which the ongoing ten thousand things can orient themselves. The dart is the specific mechanism of the return to stillness while the form is still perfect.

Chapter 28: Know the masculine, keep to the feminine, and be the valley of the world. The pinned butterfly becomes the valley: the receptive, stable, permanently available form to which the ongoing living of the collective can return and from which it can take its measure.

Chapter 41: The Tao that is bright seems dark. The Tao that advances seems to retreat. The dart that pins the butterfly seems to kill it. What it actually produces is the specific form of immortality available to the perfect — the permanence that the living, flying butterfly could never achieve.

The Yi Jing Resonance

The primary hexagram is Hexagram 1 — Qian (The Creative) — which has appeared at the opening of significant sequences throughout the Leo and Virgo series. Here it arrives at the opening of the second hemicycle in its most fully expressed and most cosmically significant form: the creative force that has achieved its complete, perfect, archetypal expression — the dragon fully realised, the creative principle in its most crystallised form.

The commentary's final line: the flight of dragons — the specific, fully realised expression of the creative force that constitutes the archetypal. The pinned butterfly is the flight of dragons fixed: the supreme creative achievement preserved in the form that makes it permanently available as the standard.

The shadow hexagram is Hexagram 2 — Kun (The Receptive) — the necessary complement. The archetype preserved by the dart is available only to those with the receptive quality to receive what it offers: the living butterfly can be seen by anyone, but the archetypal meaning of the pinned butterfly is accessible only to those who approach it with the specific quality of receptive attention that Weil's concept of attention names.

The Philosophical Content

Plato earned his place here more completely than at any previous degree. The butterfly impaled by the dart is the most direct physical image in the entire Sabian cycle of what Plato meant by the Form: the perfect, eternal, unchanging, archetypal pattern of which all individual instances are imperfect approximations. The pinned butterfly is not a butterfly — it is the Form of the butterfly, the specific, crystallised, permanently accessible pattern against which all living butterflies are measured and found to be more-or-less adequate approximations.

For Plato, the Forms were not human constructions. They were the genuine structure of reality — the eternal patterns that the transient world of appearances was always pointing toward. The dart that pins the butterfly at the moment of its perfection is the Platonic move: the transcendence of the transient individual instance in favour of the permanent archetypal form.

Keats returns here with Ode on a Grecian Urn — his sustained meditation on exactly the paradox that Libra 1° embodies. The figures on the Grecian urn are frozen at their moment of greatest beauty — the lover will never kiss, the trees will never lose their leaves, the piper will play forever. Thou still unravish'd bride of quietness, thou foster-child of silence and slow time. The urn preserves perfection at the cost of life. The pinned butterfly does the same. And Keats's question — whether beauty is truth and truth is beauty — is the Libra 1° question: whether the archetypal perfection preserved by the dart is more real than the living flight it replaces.

The Evolutionary Astrology Lens

Jeffrey Wolf Green would read Libra 1° as the soul's evolutionary arrival at the beginning of the second hemicycle — the specific, threshold experience of the shift from the individualization of the Aries-to-Virgo arc to the collectivization of the Libra-to-Pisces arc.

The South Node pattern at Libra 1° often carries the memory of having been the butterfly — of having achieved genuine individual perfection through the Virgoan disciplines — and of having then either allowed the dart to pin at the wrong moment (the conformity of the shadow) or having avoided the dart entirely, refusing the transition from the living individual to the archetypal representative that genuine collectivisation requires.

The North Node invitation is toward ARTICULATION — Jones's keyword — in its most genuinely Libran form: the specific, clear, precisely expressed embodiment of the archetypal pattern that has been developed through the Virgoan journey. Not the performance of the pattern but its living, genuine, precisely articulated expression — the butterfly whose wings, when pinned, display exactly what the butterfly most fully is.

The Buddhist Dimension

The Buddhist concept of dharmakāya — the truth body, the specific, formless, eternal dimension of the Buddha that is not the historical individual but the archetypal pattern of awakening that the historical individual embodied — is the pinned butterfly's deepest spiritual parallel. The dart that preserves the butterfly at its moment of perfection is the transition from the nirmāṇakāya (the historical, individual manifestation) to the dharmakāya (the archetypal, eternal, permanently available pattern of the awakening).

The concept of the ideal form in Buddhism — the specific, crystallised, culturally transmitted image of what a Buddha or a bodhisattva most fully is — functions exactly as the pinned butterfly functions in the natural historian's collection: it is the standard, the archetype, the permanently available form against which the ongoing development of practitioners can orient itself.

The Soul's Work

What is the butterfly that you are most fully being?

Not the caterpillar you came from — Virgo showed us that, the long journey of metamorphosis through discipline and ordeal and mastery. And not the flutter you do on good days. The specific, fully-expressed form of what you most completely are when you are most completely yourself: the butterfly at the peak of its flight, just before the dart.

Libra 1° opens the second half of the wheel with this question — and with this challenge. The second hemisphere is the hemisphere of collectivisation: the movement from the individual development of the first half toward the social expression of the second. And what the collectivisation requires is not merely the individual — it requires the individual who has become, through genuine development, the embodiment of an archetype. The perfect specimen. The living standard.

The dart is not the enemy. The dart is the specific mechanism through which the living individual becomes the permanent archetype that the community can orient around. Rudhyar's description of the transfiguration is the most complete articulation of this: at the moment of transfiguration, the human individual is impaled by the divine light and becomes the Son of God — not instead of being the Son of Man, but as the completion of being the Son of Man.
