Libra 5° (4° to 5°)

What Is Transmitted Is Not Knowledge. It Is Being.

Sabian Symbol: A man revealing to his students the foundation of an inner knowledge upon which a new world could be built

The Image

The man is not lecturing. The image is not the classroom, not the podium, not the expert delivering information to the receptive audience. The word Rudhyar uses — revealing — carries something different. Revealing is what happens when something is un-veiled: what was always there, but hidden, is made visible by the specific act of the one who knows how to remove the covering.

What is being revealed is not facts or techniques. It is the foundation of an inner knowledge — the specific, essential, root dimension of the understanding upon which a genuinely new world could be built. Not the information that improves the old world, not the insight that optimises the existing system. The foundation: the specific, deep, irreducible thing upon which everything genuinely new must rest.

And the students are there not merely to receive the information but to be changed by the encounter. Rudhyar's most essential formulation: what is transmitted, if the situation is really adequate and understood by all participants, is not merely knowledge. It is actually being-ness. The genuine teacher does not transfer knowledge. They transmit being. The student, after the genuine encounter, is different — not more informed but genuinely more fully themselves.

When the pupil is ready, the Master appears. The master may appear in many disguises. What matters is not the Master but the Mastery the Master reveals — the truth within the disciple saluting, in true humility, the truth in the Teacher.

The Libra collection at Gamla Healing was made for those who know the difference between giving information and transmitting being — who can recognise the dormant potential in another and create the conditions in which it awakens. Explore the Libra collection.

The Archetype

The thirty-seventh Libra sequence closes here, at its fifth and final stage. The sequence has traced the complete arc of the Libran initiation into the second hemicycle: the immortalised archetype (Libra 1°), the seed released from the fruit (Libra 2°), the fresh beginning of the new day (Libra 3°), the campfire communion of the kindred spirits (Libra 4°), and now — the fifth stage, the culmination — the genuine teacher revealing the foundation upon which the new world can be built.

The sequence has moved from the individual achievement made archetypal (Libra 1°) through the creative centralisation that released the essential truth (Libra 2°) and the new day's fresh beginning (Libra 3°) to the communion of kindred spirits around the central fire (Libra 4°), and now arrives at the specific, mature, culminating form of social relationship that all four of the preceding stages were building toward: the teacher-student relationship in which genuine transmission — not of information but of being — becomes possible.

Jung would read the genuine teacher through his concept of the mana personality — the specific, charged, luminous quality of the person in whom genuine wisdom is concentrated and from whom it radiates without their necessarily intending it. The authentic teacher does not need to perform the teaching. Their presence itself teaches. This is what Rudhyar means by the transmission of being-ness: the specific, living quality of the fully developed person, encountered in genuine relationship, produces a genuine transformation in the one who encounters it — not through the information transferred but through the quality of the contact.

The shadow Jones named — fatuous pride in the self's acumen and subtle or underhanded attempts to dominate everyone — is the exact shadow of the genuine teacher: the person who has the knowledge without the being, who uses the position of the teacher to assert the superiority of their own insights rather than to call forth the dormant truth in the student. The master manipulator dressed as a spiritual guide.

The Taoist Current

Chapter 17 of the Tao Te Ching: When the best leaders' work is done the people say we did it ourselves. The genuine teacher makes themselves unnecessary — the teaching is complete when the student no longer needs the teacher, when the truth that was in the teacher has been recognised in the student and the student has become capable of standing in it without the teacher's support.

Chapter 81: True words are not fine-sounding. Fine-sounding words are not true. The genuine teacher does not need rhetorical skill. The truth that is being transmitted does not require decoration. It requires the specific quality of the contact — the genuine presence of the teacher, the genuine readiness of the student — and when these two conditions are genuinely met, the transmission occurs almost independently of the words used.

Chapter 41: The highest virtue is not virtuous; therefore it has virtue. The genuine teacher is not teaching; therefore the teaching occurs.

The Yi Jing Resonance

The primary hexagram is Hexagram 4 — Meng (Youthful Folly / The Young Shoot) — which has appeared throughout the Leo and Virgo series as the hexagram of the learning relationship, the student-teacher dynamic, the specific quality of genuine openness to instruction that makes genuine transmission possible.

Here it arrives at the culmination of the thirty-seventh Libra sequence in its most completely developed form: not the young shoot that has found its teacher and is beginning the learning, but the relationship fully established, the genuine transmission fully understood by both parties, the Meng situation at its most mature and most productive.

The commentary says: it is not I who seek the young fool. The young fool seeks me. At the first oracle I inform him. If he asks two or three times, it is importunity. If he importunes, I give him no information. The transmission requires the genuine readiness of the student — the specific, open, non-importuning quality of the student who asks once, genuinely, and is ready to receive what comes. The importuning student — asking again and again to receive what the first answer already contained — is the student who has not yet developed the quality of being that makes the transmission possible.

The shadow hexagram is Hexagram 49 — Ge (Revolution) — the radical change, the dramatic transformation. The shadow of the genuine teacher-student relationship is the pseudo-revolutionary who mistakes dramatic disruption of the received forms for the genuine transmission that requires the patient, humble, genuinely present quality of the real Meng situation.

The Philosophical Content

Socrates — through his maieutic method, his sustained practice of the midwife's art — is the thinker this degree calls for most directly. Socrates did not teach in the ordinary sense. He helped the student give birth to what was already within them — the dormant truth that the student had not yet been able to articulate because no one had created the specific conditions of genuine inquiry in which the articulation could occur.

The Socratic method is the transmission of being-ness in its most precisely articulated Western form: the teacher is not the source of the truth but the midwife of the truth that is already in the student. The question is the instrument — but the question is only the instrument of the specific, genuine presence of the teacher who is genuinely interested in what the student's answer will reveal. The knowledge passes, as the source material says, by osmosis rather than by expression: what is transmitted is the quality of the encounter, and in the quality of the encounter, the dormant truth in the student is called forth.

Krishnamurti is genuinely earned here — not as a default but through his lifelong, sustained, radical critique of the teacher-student relationship itself and his insistence that the genuine transmission is not from teacher to student but from the truth itself to the consciousness that has genuinely prepared to receive it. His formulation — the truth is a pathless land — is the most radical version of what Rudhyar names: what is transmitted is not the Master's particular path but the Mastery itself, which is not the Master's possession but the truth that the student must eventually contact in themselves.

Krishnamurti's lifelong refusal to allow his followers to make him into a guru — his insistence that reverence for the truth rather than devotion to the teacher was the appropriate relationship — is precisely what Rudhyar describes: devotion to a guru may be the way, but sooner or later it should be transmuted into reverence: the truth within the disciple saluting in true humility the truth in the Teacher.

The Evolutionary Astrology Lens

Jeffrey Wolf Green would read Libra 5° as the evolutionary culmination of the thirty-seventh Libra sequence — the specific, mature, fully developed form of the Libran relationship that the preceding four stages have been building toward. The campfire of Libra 4° was the gathering of kindred spirits. Libra 5° shows what can happen within the gathered kindred spirits when one among them has developed enough genuine inner knowledge to transmit it — not as information but as being.

The South Node pattern here often carries the memory of the teacher-student relationship in its shadow form — the guru whose devotion became the end rather than the means, the authority whose recognition became the transmission rather than the truth the transmission was pointing toward. The evolutionary challenge is the specific, mature, humble form of the genuine teacher: the one who can recognise the truth in the student and create the conditions for its awakening, without the pride that converts the gift into domination.

The North Node invitation is toward AFFINITY — Jones's keyword — in its most genuinely Libran form: the specific, empathic, deeply present quality of the genuine teacher's relationship with the student, grounded not in the superiority of the teacher's knowledge but in the shared affinity with the truth that both teacher and student are oriented toward. The truth in the teacher saluting the truth in the student. The affinity of two beings who are both, in different degrees of development, moving toward the same light.

The Buddhist Dimension

The Buddhist concept of dharma transmission — the specific, lineage-based, teacher-to-student transmission of the genuine awakening that constitutes the core of the Zen tradition — is the most precisely parallel Buddhist framework for what Libra 5° describes. The dharma transmission is not the transmission of the Buddhist teachings as information. It is the specific, living, genuinely personal transmission of the awakened quality itself from the teacher's being to the student's being — the thing that, when genuinely transmitted, is not added to the student but revealed within them.

The Zen concept of mind-to-mind transmissionishin denshin — is what Rudhyar describes as the transmission of being-ness: the specific, wordless, direct communication of the awakened quality from one consciousness that genuinely has it to another consciousness that is genuinely ready to receive it. The words of the teaching are the finger pointing at the moon. The transmission is the moon itself.

The Soul's Work

Who is your teacher?

Not the person whose information you consume. The specific person — or persons, or books, or practices — in whose presence you become more fully yourself. In whose presence the dormant truth in you becomes articulate. In whose presence the specific, irreducible quality of your own being-ness is recognised and called forth rather than managed or approved or improved.

And: who are you teaching?

Not instructing — teaching, in the genuine sense that Libra 5° is pointing at. Whose dormant potential do you have the specific affinity to recognise? Whose truth do you have the specific, empathic, genuinely present quality to call forth? What is the foundation of the inner knowledge that you have genuinely received, through your own genuine transmission experiences, that the new world you are building requires you to reveal?

The fifth stage of the thirty-seventh sequence closes with the most challenging question of the entire Libra initiation: are you willing to be the teacher? Not the authority, not the guru, not the one who has arrived at the truth and is now dispensing it to the less developed. The genuine teacher — the one whose own genuine development has produced the specific quality of being that, when encountered, calls forth what is dormant in the other.

Moving towards something greater. As the source material closes. Both teacher and student are moving toward something greater. The transmission is not from the arrived to the arriving. It is between two people who are both, in different ways and at different stages, moving toward the same light.

The Libra collection at Gamla Healing was made for those who are moving toward something greater — and who, in moving, create the conditions in which the dormant truth in others can be recognised and called forth. Explore the Libra collection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Sabian Symbol for Libra 5°?

The Sabian Symbol for Libra 5° is A man revealing to his students the foundation of an inner knowledge upon which a new world could be built, channelled by Elsie Wheeler in 1925 and later interpreted by Dane Rudhyar as an image of the essential process of transmission — the culminating stage of the thirty-seventh Libra sequence, in which what is transmitted between teacher and genuinely ready student is not merely knowledge but being-ness itself. Jones's keyword is affinity.

What does Libra 5° mean in a natal chart?

Having a natal planet at Libra 5° often indicates a soul with a particular relationship to the teacher-student dynamic — a being who carries the specific quality of genuine inner knowledge that is capable of calling forth the dormant truth in others. There is frequently a quality of genuine teaching capacity at this placement, alongside the evolutionary challenge of distinguishing the genuine transmission from the subtle domination that masquerades as it.

What is the keyword for Libra 5°?

The keyword assigned by Marc Edmund Jones is AFFINITY — the specific, empathic, deeply present quality of the genuine teacher's relationship with the student, grounded not in the superiority of the teacher's knowledge but in the shared orientation toward the same truth. True affinity is the mutual recognition of the same light in two beings who are both moving toward it, at different stages of the journey.

What does Rudhyar mean by "the transmission of being-ness"?

Rudhyar's most essential formulation is that what the genuine teacher transmits is not information but being-ness — the specific, living quality of the fully developed person that, when genuinely encountered, produces a transformation in the one who encounters it. This transformation is not the addition of knowledge but the recognition and awakening of what was already dormant in the student — the truth that was already there, now called forth by the quality of the contact.

What is the shadow side of Libra 5°?

Jones identified it as fatuous pride in the self's acumen and subtle or underhanded attempts to dominate — the person who has the knowledge without the being, who uses the position of the teacher to assert superiority rather than to call forth the dormant truth in the student. The most important diagnostic: the genuine teacher makes themselves unnecessary. The shadow teacher makes themselves indispensable.

How does Socrates' maieutic method illuminate this degree?

Socrates described his teaching as the midwife's art — he did not give birth to the truth in the student but helped the student give birth to what was already within them. The specific, genuine presence of the teacher who is genuinely interested in what the student's answer will reveal — not in demonstrating the teacher's own knowledge — creates the conditions for the genuine birth. The knowledge passes by osmosis: what is transmitted is the quality of the encounter, and in that quality, the dormant truth is called forth.

Why is Krishnamurti specifically earned at this degree?

Krishnamurti's lifelong insistence that the genuine transmission is not from teacher to student but from the truth itself to the consciousness genuinely prepared to receive it — and his radical refusal to allow followers to make him into a guru — is precisely what Rudhyar describes. Devotion to the guru may be the beginning, but it must be transmuted into reverence: the truth within the disciple saluting the truth in the Teacher. Krishnamurti's entire life was the demonstration of this transmutation in its most consistent form.
