The basketball team is practising — or playing, or both, since in a genuine team the practice and the play are not entirely separable. The ball arcs upward. The ring is there, high and narrow, waiting. The ball either passes through or it doesn't, and whether it does depends not only on the one player who threw it but on the whole system of movement and positioning and attention that the team has been developing together.

Rudhyar attends to the ball's trajectory with characteristic precision: the ego-consciousness must be driven upward to a focal point or circle that is ready to receive it. The basketball hoop is the focused opening — the specific, narrow, elevated target through which the consciousness must pass if genuine development is to occur. And the team is the system that makes the passing possible: no single player can drive the ego-consciousness through the hoop alone.

The original formulation of the symbol, as Rudhyar notes, referenced only one team — not two competing teams. This is not a competition. It is the practice of group integration: the training of a collective to operate as an organic whole, to develop the specific coordination of individual capacities that allows something to be achieved that no individual capacity alone could achieve.

The girl's basketball team is also specific. Rudhyar reads this as a particular quality of consciousness: the receptive, more specifically open-to-collective-forces dimension of human awareness. The training of this team is the training of receptivity to the larger pattern — the development of the capacity to be genuinely moved by and genuinely responsive to what the collective needs.

The Archetype

The thirty-fifth Virgo sequence opens here. Rudhyar notes the parallel with the merry-go-round of Virgo 6°, which also opened a second-level sequence. Both are training grounds — the merry-go-round trained the individual's relationship with the cyclic life force; the basketball team trains the group's capacity for collective expression. Both involve the specific, elevated target: the ring on the merry-go-round that the child reaches for, the basketball hoop that the team drives the ball toward.

The parallel deepens: the merry-go-round ring could be caught by the individual rider alone, if the skill and timing were right. The basketball hoop is driven at by the team — the individual shot that passes through the hoop is the culmination of the whole team's movement and coordination. The thirty-fifth sequence is developing what the thirty-second sequence developed, but at the collective level.

Jung would read the girl's basketball team through his concept of the group Self — the specific quality of collective consciousness that emerges when a genuinely integrated group acts as an organic whole, in which the individual members are simultaneously more fully themselves and more genuinely connected to what exceeds any of them individually. The team at its best is not the sum of five players. It is a genuinely emergent form of collective intelligence and collective expression.

The shadow Jones named — listless conformity — is the antithesis of this: the team that is technically a team but is not genuinely integrated, in which the individual members are present in body but not genuinely participating in the collective consciousness, where membership has produced not genuine team consciousness but the passive acquiescence to shared activity without the genuine investment that makes the team genuinely more than the sum of its parts.

The Taoist Current

Chapter 11 of the Tao Te Ching: Thirty spokes share the hub of a wheel; it is the centre hole that makes it useful.

The basketball team is this: five players sharing the hub of a single collective purpose. Each player is a spoke. The centre hole — the hoop, the shared goal, the focal point that the ego-consciousness is being driven toward — is what makes the whole system useful. Without the shared focal point, five players are just five individuals moving in the same space. With it, they are a team.

Chapter 8: Water benefits ten thousand things and does not compete. The basketball team's genuine expression is this: each player benefits the others, the team benefits the collective goal, and the movement is not competitive among themselves but cooperative toward the shared target.

The Yi Jing Resonance

The primary hexagram is Hexagram 58 — Dui (The Joyous / Lake) — which we have met many times through the Leo and Virgo series. Here it arrives in its most specifically collective and most specifically training-oriented expression: the joy of genuine group expression, the Lake's quality of reflecting and sustaining and amplifying that which comes to it, applied to the specific, joyful, genuinely collective work of the basketball team.

The commentary's opening — the joyous. Success. Perseverance furthers — is the team's foundational orientation. The joy is not incidental. The team that trains joyfully, that genuinely enjoys the shared work of developing the collective intelligence, develops something different from the team that merely endures the training. The joyful perseverance produces the genuine group integration.

The shadow hexagram is Hexagram 52 — Gen (Keeping Still / Mountain) — the stillness that can become, in its shadow form, the immobility of listless conformity: the team that has stopped moving, that is going through the motions without the genuine investment that makes the motions mean something.

The Philosophical Content

Aristotle returns here through his concept of philia — friendship, the specific bond between people who are engaged in a common pursuit of genuine excellence. The basketball team is philia in its most specific and most active form: not the casual friendship of shared pleasantness, but the deep, genuine, mutually demanding bond of people who are committed to a common goal that requires the best of each of them.

For Aristotle, the highest form of friendship is the friendship of virtue — in which what is valued is not the other person's usefulness or pleasantness but their genuine excellence, their committed pursuit of what is genuinely good. The basketball team at its best is this: each player genuinely valued for their specific excellence, genuinely valued for what they bring to the team that no other player brings, genuinely challenged to develop their excellence by the team's shared commitment to the collective goal.

Durkheim would return here with collective effervescence — which we first encountered at Leo 15° and have met at various points through the Leo series. The basketball team at its best generates exactly this: the specific, irreducible quality of collective energy that is more than the sum of the individual energies, that is felt by each player as something that lifts them beyond what they could achieve individually, that is the group Soul becoming perceptible through the specific, focused, well-integrated collective expression.

The Evolutionary Astrology Lens

Jeffrey Wolf Green would read Virgo 21° as the soul's evolutionary encounter with the specific form of collective expression that the thirty-fifth Virgo sequence is developing: the training of receptivity to collective forces, the development of the capacity to be genuinely moved by and genuinely responsive to what the group consciousness requires.

The South Node pattern here often carries one of two forms of the familiar imbalance: either the hyper-individualism that cannot genuinely integrate into team consciousness (the player who is technically excellent but cannot move with the team), or the listless conformity of the shadow (the player whose membership in the team has produced not genuine group consciousness but passive acquiescence to shared activity).

The North Node invitation is toward EXPRESSION — Jones's keyword — in its specifically collective form: the effective self-consummation through exceptional cooperation and adaptability. The keyword is not cooperation alone — it is expression through cooperation: the individual's specific gifts finding their fullest expression precisely through the team's collective expression, the individual excellence most completely realised in the moment when it serves the collective goal.

The Buddhist Dimension

The Buddhist concept of karuṇā — compassion, the genuine care for the wellbeing of others — finds its most practically active expression in the basketball team. The player who passes the ball to the teammate in a better position is practicing karuṇā in its most embodied, most immediate, most practically effective form: the genuine care for the collective outcome that overrides the individual ego's desire to be the one who scores.

The concept of interdependence — pratītyasamutpāda — receives here one of its most concretely visible expressions: the basketball play that results in the ball passing through the hoop is the product of a system of mutual arising, in which each player's position depends on every other player's movement, in which no single element of the play could have produced the outcome alone.

The Soul's Work

What position do you play on your team?

Not the position you play on many teams — the specific position you play on this particular team, with these particular people, in service of this particular collective goal. The skill set that is yours, that the others depend on, that would leave the team genuinely less capable if it were absent.

The source material is direct: each member of Team Humanity has their own skill set, upon which others depend. We are therefore authorised to take the initiative to express our particular skills and understandings on behalf of the community. Authorised. Not permitted, not encouraged — authorised. The specific excellence that is genuinely yours to bring is not optional. The team needs it. The collective goal requires it.

The listless conformity of the shadow is the failure of authorisation: the team member who is present but not genuinely expressing, who is going through the motions of membership without the genuine investment of the specific excellence that makes the membership genuinely valuable. This person takes up space in the team without contributing what the team actually needs from them.

Virgo 21° asks for the active cooperation that the source material distinguishes from passive acceptance: the genuine, skilled, specifically excellent participation in the collective expression that makes the whole team more than the sum of its parts.

Envision. Practice. Perform. The sequence is the team's work and it is yours: the vision of the collective goal, the practice of the specific skill that serves it, and the performance in the moment when the game is actually happening.

The ball is in the air. The hoop is there. Five players have made this moment possible.
