Mercury stationed retrograde this morning at 10° of Aquarius.
Mercury just stationed retrograde today January 14th at 10° of the sign of Aquarius. It will “move backwards” until February 3rd where it will station direct at 24° of Capricorn. In reality, Mercury is of course not moving back on its ecliptic. This is an optical illusion produced by the perspective that we have of the movement of other planets from our own position on Earth. Orbiting very close to the sun, Mercury can retrograde 3 to 4 times per year for a duration of 24 days on average. But what does it mean for us exactly? What kind of effects does it have on us?
The general reputation of this transit is quite bad. It is said to disturb electronic devices, to increase the chances of delays if we use means of transportation, to provoke misunderstandings, to favor anxiety and confusion… In short, it can bring some mess into your life. To be honest, all of the above is true, Mercury retrograde can be a real challenge when forming difficult aspects in your natal chart. We definitely can’t deny that!
However, the agenda of this transit is not all evil, it goes further than that. When a planet is in retrograde motion, it also invites us to do an inner work, to dig deeper into the matter of things and have a constructive overview of the past. It helps us to step back and compare our current situation with what we previously experienced. It pushes us to review the lessons we’ve learned (or not) and to use them to answer life differently this time.
This is why, during the next 3 to 5 weeks, we might feel nostalgic or feel the need to delve into the past, old memories (good or bad) could resurface for no apparent reasons, and it is up to us to make good use of it to cast some light on the challenges that we’re currently facing.
This retrograde takes place partly in the social, independent and innovative sign of Aquarius, and in the hardworking, goal-oriented sign of Capricorn. Here, the necessary work refers to our mind, the way we think and communicate (Mercury is the messenger of the Gods, don’t forget that!), within our social circle (Aquarius) and our working environment (Capricorn). Many of us have been very self-focused, thinking about their future plans, improving themselves, changing their mindset, and that’s wonderful. But didn’t we go too far and isolated ourselves from our personal and supportive group of people? How can we merge our vision, our personal goals while conserving the important social bonds we have? How can we make them work in synergy?
On top of that, Mercury is forming an exact square with Uranus at 10° of Taurus. Uranus rules the unexpected, it’s a rule-breaker, a reformer. In Taurus, the sign of abundance, stability and peace, we can say that Uranus is like an elephant in a china shop. This mix of energy could manifest itself with breakthrough ideas, a restless mind and anxiety, etc. There’s no way to predict exactly how it will impact each of us, as it depends on our natal chart and an infinite number of other parameters.
The only thing we can say is that this Mercury retrograde, starting under the pressure of Uranus, will be shaaaaky. Our minds are gonna be electrified by the ruler of Aquarius so be ready for that. It’s gonna push us to go out of the norm, to innovate and find new ways to think and communicate in order to … ? Do you remember? Merge both our life goals, our vision, and our social sphere.
We should be able to achieve our goals without neglecting our social interactions and more than that, to ask for help and collaboration when necessary. We don’t have to do everything alone and asking for some support isn’t a sign of weakness. This is a mutual exchange, a synergy: the group helps us grow and flourish, and we nourish the group back by casting our unique light.
