We just entered the Winter season yesterday, so one day later as always, we officially kick-started Capricorn season! We quite radically switch from the fun-loving, enthusiastic and spontaneous Sagittarius archetype, to the very sober, responsible and disciplined Capricorn. Often criticized in pop-astrology for its cold, heartless and business-oriented personality, I have to say that Capricorn is one of my favorite signs of the Zodiac (and I don’t say that because I have a stellium of 6 plantes over there!). We just need to go beyond the stereotypes and get to know it better. We then quickly discover that the Sea-Goat is of incredible importance in our lives.
Nowadays, we usually associate Capricorn with the Mountain Goat, but its most ancient symbol is the Sea-Goat, half-goat half-fish, the tail being the “fish part”. Many stories and myths explain the origin of this creature. One of them says that Zeus placed this constellation in the sky in honor of the ancient mythological Greek God Pan (a faun) with the fish tail symbolizing the fight that Zeus won against the monster Typhon.
When we think of it, this is a very surprising combination and we can wonder which characteristics can be associated with this mythical creature. Well, on one hand, the goat is a very persistent and agile animal that probably has one of the best balance skills that exists, able to climb the steepest cliffs without one ounce of fear. On the other hand, its fish tail allows it to swim and dive as deep as can be. So, the Sea-Goat may not be able to fly, but from the highest peaks to the deepest abysses, there are not many places on this Earth that this creature can’t reach. And this is one of its biggest assets: nothing frightens Capricorn, everything is within reach.
Knowing that it can basically achieve everything, the Sea-Goat can be extremely ambitious and goal-oriented. It’s exactly what we need every year when we enter this period: we need to have a look at the year that just passed and turn our attention to the new year coming ahead. What could we possibly plan for our future? What do we want to achieve? What do we want to change or implement in our lives?
We can use the skills of the Sea-Goat to design on paper the life of our dreams: planning, organization, ambition, prudence… And later on use its patience, discipline, efficiency, responsibility, hardworking and down-to-earth qualities to actually make things real.
There is however one thing that we have to pay attention to: INTEGRITY. More than anything else, if we want to genuinely satisfy the Capricorn part of ourselves, is to be aligned with our core values. If we set our goals for the wrong reasons (only for fame or money for example) the result will be dissatisfaction, depression, workaholism, isolation, desperately chasing after empty rewards. To be satisfied, Capricorn has to make sure that it’s climbing the right mountain. If it doesn’t, no matter how many medals and prizes it receives, the Sea-Goat will be haunted by a feeling of emptiness and could lead to self-destructive behaviors.
So, that’s why the planning phase is so important: we first have to use our instinct and listen to our gut (Taurean qualities) in order to reach goals that actually feed our soul's evolutionary purposes and to live a life full of integrity.
Maybe you understand a bit more now why I love and respect the energy of Capricorn so much. It allows us to envision our life and make our dreams real. I really encourage you to use the end of this year and the beginning of next year to think about which direction you want to take, and what you want to achieve. Make a concrete plan as detailed and visionary as possible for yourself. No matter how unrealistic it might seem to you right now, we all have unexpected resources (more than we think!), and whatever we want to achieve, nothing is per se impossible. We just have to define, step by step, the way that will lead us to the top.
But remember: before climbing or diving, ask yourself if this is really the right direction for you. Listen to your heart, this is your compass. And it never lies.
